Principal’s Welcome

Welcome to Kiltartan National School. Through our website, we hope you learn about the warm, welcoming and creative learning environment we have in our wonderful school. Kiltartan NS is a co-educational, vertical school catering from Junior Infants to 6th Class. Our school is situated in the scenic surrounds of Coole Park and we pride ourselves in our rich history associated with Lady Gregory and her wonderful legacy locally, nationally and internationally. Kiltartan NS is a school where every person is valued and given every opportunity to thrive in a friendly, caring and positive learning environment. The holistic development of every pupil is central to our work and opportunities for developing talents and strengths are provided by all. We are blessed here to have such a hard-working, diligent, caring and talented staff here in Kiltartan.

We are most grateful to our very supportive community; our wonderful parent body, our Board of Management and community groups in the Kiltartan and Gort area. We look forward to sharing our learning, our activities, our events and our news with you on our newly updated website. Please feel free to contact the school with any queries or how we can help you in any way.

Kind regards,

School History

The earliest recorded account of a school in Kiltartan is found in 1824. This was a hedge school located in Castletown. In the 1830’s the school was located in the parish chapel, a thatched Mass-house. The system of National Education was set up in 1831. The first Kiltartan school to be absorbed into the national system was a hedge school, established on 7th January 1851. The red brick schoolhouse designed by Lady Gregory’s brother, Frank Persse and located at Kiltartan Cr oss opened in 1892. This school remained in use until 1960. It is now the Kiltartan Gregory Museum. The parents and grandparents of many of the present-day pupils attended this school.

The present school was built in 1959 and opened its doors to the children in the area in September 1960.Due to an increase in numbers attending Kiltartan National School a new extension along with a carpark and set area was built in 2005. In 2010 we celebrated the Golden Jubilee (1960-2010) of our school. Once again due to the increased enrolment at our school a new school extension, comprising of 2 mainstream classrooms was completed in September 2015.Improvements were made to our existing school building during the extension work, notably the conversion of two blocks of toilets & a storage area - one block was converted to a learning support room, the other to a new secretary’s office. The chimney and centre wall were also removed from the 2 front classrooms to make one large classroom/ assembly room. The heating system was also upgraded within the entire school. On June 14th 2016 our new extension was officially opened by Ciaran Cannon, T.D. Further enhancements and development took place in 2022, where we have a fantastic new modern spacious and comfortable classroom along with a spacious new Learning Support and Resource Room.
